Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), one of the earliest forms of cognitive behaviour therapy, is an active, solution-oriented therapy which focuses on resolving emotional, cognitive, and behavioural problems. The REBT framework assumes that individuals have both rational and irrational tendencies. Irrational thoughts prevent goal attainment, lead to inner conflict, lead to more conflict with others and poor mental health. Rational thoughts lead to goal attainment, reduced inner conflict and conflict with others, and improved mental health.

REBT strives to change irrational beliefs, challenge thinking, and promote rational self-talk through a variety of strategies. These strategies may include: disputation of irrational beliefs, reframing, problem solving, role-playing, and modelling.
